Google to Get Last Word in Week of Tablet Launches

Google isn't ceding the tech media spotlight to Apple and Microsoft. As Apple gets set to unveil its iPad mini, and as Microsoft revs up for its Surface launch, Google is lubricating the rumor mill with some hints about an expanded Nexus line -- perhaps a 32 GB 7-inch tablet, one with 3G, and maybe a 10-inch version. A new Nexus smartphone could be in the works too, perhaps running an updated Android OS. Google could be poised to roll out new Nexus tablet offerings at next Monday's press event in New York City. The search giant is also likely to introduce a new smartphone, the LG Nexus 4, powered by Android 4.2. The timing of the event is certainly interesting, as it comes later on the same day that Microsoft is holding a Windows Phone 8 event in San Francisco. It will follow Microsoft's own NYC Windows 8 event this Thursday, featuring its Surface tablet, as well as Apple's much-anticipated announcement of an iPad mini, scheduled to take place on Tuesday. "The playground is open," declare Google's invitations to the event, suggesting this could be the company's attempt to offer a real game changer with its Nexus devices. Of course, even with the head-to-head timing, it could be that Google might still hold some news back. "Google may lay low until the Windows 8 launch is over," said Roger Kay, principal analyst at Endpoint Technologies Associates. "No point in getting lost in Microsoft's barrage. Google can find a quiet spot before CES to update its positioning and branding." Google did not respond to request for further details. Take Two Tablets It is rumored that Google will in fact introduce two new 32-GB models of the Nexus 7, one that will include HSPA+ (3G) support, making for a tablet that is ready to hit the road. Google is also expected to release details of a 10-inch tablet from Samsung. This "Codename Manta" device reportedly runs on Google's new Android 4.2 OS, and will offer 2,560x1,600 resolution. It is suspected that the Manta could be introduced as the Nexus 10. How this device will stake up against the latest offerings from Apple, Microsoft and even Amazon has yet to be seen, but it is clear that lines are being drawn in the sand, if not carved in stone when it comes to what each tablet offers users. "In a real way, tablet evolution is increasingly requiring users to decide which walled garden they want to be locked into, said Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT. "Apple continues to pursue a deeply proprietary approach which attempts to firmly control the content, apps and services users access." "Amazon has always used the Kindle as a conduit for book sales, but the company is looking ahead to extend the Kindle channel to an increasing number of products and services," King told TechNewsWorld. "With the Surface, Microsoft is attempting to create a Windows-centric user experience which is far narrower than conventional PCs," he noted. Google's Move Google appears to be looking at a different approach, but given that it has managed to dominate the smartphone market, in terms of the most popular OS, it could be looking to make a similar play in the tablet space. "Google is offering the closest thing to an open tablet platform of any vendor," said King. "Some would argue against this, but I believe the company's leverage of a broad variety of Web-enabled apps and services -- including its own Web-based offerings -- is notably more flexible than anything Apple, Amazon and Microsoft are currently offering or have in mind for the future." Those apps could give Google that edge. "Google has done a good job lining up apps," said Rhoda Alexander, senior manager for monitors and tablets at IHS iSuppli. "Google has capital to make those kinds of investments to build up apps for the tablet market." The search giant could also take a page from Amazon's playbook -- and perhaps Apple's -- in going after the educational market. "Amazon's push into education is interesting, and it is a potentially large market," Alexander told TechNewsWorld. "The education market opens up new possibilities for vendors as it gives them the ability to resell year after year. The vendors are really lining up to bring out products for that market."

IPAD MINI PRICE AND SPECIFICATION

fter months of speculation, the iPad Mini launch is now official with a 7.9-inch screen. Is it a Google Nexus 7 beater though? The iPad Mini launch comes as no great shock, but as the reviews roll in, what remains surprising is how Apple has reacted to the 7-inch tablet hype. The charge towards smaller tablet form factors, led by the Google Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD, has finally been endorsed by Apple. After watching Tim Cook address an intimate gathering of tech folk from around the world here in San Jose, we've just spent a bit of time playing with the iPad Mini. Here are our initial thoughts pending a full iPad Mini review as soon as possible. iPad Mini: Build Lighter and thinner than we'd thought when watching the Keynote, the iPad Mini fits comfortably in one hand, with the reduced-size side bezels giving seemingly more screen real-estate than the Nexus 7. Jony Ive said that Apple had built the iPad Mini from the ground up, rather than just shrinking the bigger iPad 3. It shows. The rounded edges are reminiscent of the widely loved iPhone 3G and it feels durable enough to sling in a bag. It's 7.2mm thin (23% thinner than the big iPad) and 308g (Wi-Fi-only model) light. The volume and screen-rotation lock buttons have moved to the right-hand side and the headphone socket is placed on the top, rather than the bottom, where stereo speakers and the new Lightning connector can be found. Reading a book works well – especially with the updated iBooks continuous streaming feature - because of the reduced weight and size. It's a definite competitor to the Kindle in this regard. iPad Mini: Screen The LED-backlit screen looks fantastic on the 7.9-inch display. Colours are vivid, text is pin sharp, web pages render quickly and, because there's almost a 4:3 ratio going on, you get a lot of content on page. It feels squarer than the bigger iPad, but definitely works as, arguably, a better mobile experience than its bigger brother. Screen resolution is 1024x768 resolution at 163ppi – same as the iPad 2 – so apps all work without any letter-boxing. Great news for T3: iPad Edition readers – you'll be able to download and view the interactive issues immediately. Videos and photos look great and you can fit 25 app icons on every page (including the shortcut bar) iPad Mini: Camera The back-facing 5MP iSight camera is similar to what we've seen on bigger iPads. Taking pictures or video is easier with one hand, purely because of the Mini's size. In the wild, it's much more manageable than the iPad. Still shots that we took were ok, but 1080p video is more impressive. With stabilisation kicking in, plus integration with iOS 6, getting video content online will be easy. iPad Mini: Performance Hard to tell in the 15 mins that we had with the iPad Mini, but the A5 processor powered apps, games and websites along very smoothly. It's loaded with LTE, which means you'll be able to use it on EE's 4G network in the UK. 5GHz WiFi means super fast browsing with compatible routers, too. Our experience was impressive and we can't wait to give it a proper run in the coming weeks. iPad Mini: Battery Apple iPad Mini Launch Apple iPad Mini: Official pictures Apple iPad Mini revealed Apple Mac Mini unveiled Apple iPad Mini Review: Hands-on New Apple iMac 2012 unveiled Apple claims 10-hours and we hope it's close. The third-gen iPad suffered because of the sheer amount of processing power happening and, for the iPad Mini to succeed as a mobile device, battery life will need to be close to what Apple is claiming iPad Mini: Verdict We'd go as far as saying that the iPad Mini is our favourite iPad yet. The smaller size, thinner shape and lighter weight makes for a much better mobile experience. It's easy to hold and manipulate in the hand but feels durable and well-built enough to accompany you throughout the day. It's definitely more premium that we were expecting. The main sticking point, however, is price and at £269 for the entry level Wi-Fi model, it's £100 more than the Google Nexus 7. The iPad Mini will undoubtedly sell like hot cakes and will be at the top of many people's Christmas wish list, but the price still gives Android tabs a place in the market. iPad Mini release date: 2 November, 8am (Wi-Fi only), Late November (Wi-Fi + Cellular models). Pre-order from 26 October iPad Mini price: From £269
The fierce legal battle between Samsung and Apple over their respective patent rights continues to wind its way through the U.S. court system. It was Samsung's turn to claim an appellate court victory this week, but it's perhaps a pyrrhic one, given that the device in question, the Galaxy Nexus, is a dated product. Also, because the injunction against it had been stayed, sales were unaffected. This week the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit overturned a preliminary injunction granted to Apple this summer in district court by Judge Lucy Koh. Apple had shown it would see a significant loss of sales and smartphone marketshare if a preliminary injunction were not granted, she found. However, the appeals court stayed the injunction until it could formally rule. Insufficient Cause The injunction stemmed from a suit filed earlier this year, in which Apple alleged that Samsung's Galaxy Nexus smartphone infringed eight of its patents. This appeal, however, just focused on one of the patents -- an apparatus for "unified search" that uses heuristic modules to search multiple data storage locations. The appeals court cited the legal precedent that a plaintiff seeking a preliminary injunction must establish the likelihood of success on the merits, the probability of suffering irreparable harm in the absence of preliminary relief, that the balance of equities tips in the plaintiff's favor, and that an injunction would be in the public interest. Samsung challenged the district court's decision, arguing that it was abuse of discretion for the district court to find that Apple would be irreparably harmed in the absence of an injunction. Samsung also argued that Apple did not sufficiently establish a link between the harm it allegedly suffered and the infringing conduct. The appeals court said the district court erred when it determined that Apple established a sufficient causal nexus. The appeals court sent the case back to Koh for reconsideration. A Court-by-Court Battle The patent under scrutiny in this appeal was not included in the trial in which Apple won a sweeping victory against Samsung and was awarded US$1.05 billion in damages. Samsung has vowed to appeal that case -- adding to the numerous cases pending in both the U.S. and foreign legal systems. It is difficult to keep track of the many cases that are pending throughout the world between the two companies -- and perhaps even more difficult to determine if there is a larger strategy behind each individual action. "My guess is yes, someone is coordinating these cases, deciding which patent to file suit about in which court," Christopher M. Collins, a partner with Vanderpool, Frostick & Nishanian, told the E-Commerce Times. Some of the cases are no doubt brought forward for jurisdictional purposes, he noted, while some might be key to the pursuit of an overall legal strategy. "In some of these cases," said Collins, "they are definitely choosing courts for specific reasons."
